RunQ8 is happening this Saturday, and if you aren't registered, there's still time.
The brain child of the good people at Fawzia Sultan Rehabilitation Institute (FSRI), this year's run is to raise awareness about the cost of motor vehicle accidents. I'm envious of the sponsorship (Porsche) they've been able to secure, and I am certain that my colleague, Dr. Nick Scull at FSRI managed to finangle a ride in something amazing. Porsche's sponsorship is substantial, and along with Zain, a local telecom company, Kuwait will have the opportunity to address road safety early in life (5 - 7 year olds) and incredible cost of motor vehicle mayhem for those who've been injured.
This year kicks off the Decade of Traffic Safety Awareness, and to give credit, someone with some clout in the government has managed to have digital signs erected over most of the major roads before 2022. These signs flash (sometimes hilarious) messages to all the people zooming along. As I consider the speed of the traffic, and general behaviour of the motorists, they're either not reading the signs or they're going too fast to comprehend them. Certainly there's been no discernible change in the craziness on the highways. But, every change starts with one small step in the right direction. So it is with FSRI and the work they've done to bring this intiative to reality.
Anyway, this Saturday, 8 Soor Center therapists will be making their way from Marina Mall to the Scientific Center and back again. A distance of 10km. I say "make their way" because I will not be running. I will not be jogging. In fact, I tried really hard to convince my fellow runners to turn the event into a bed race. I would be the patient.
No dice.
Consequently, I will be sauntering 10km on Saturday, hoping to arrive back at Marina Mall before everyone has gone home. I will most definitely want my race medal. Last year, I understand the original winner raced out of sight at the start, promptly got on a bus, and disembarked at the Scientific Center. Eventually, his deceit was discovered and the award went to the real winner. I am debating checking the bus schedules. I know I won't win; I have no bed to ride, and 10km seems WAY too many... I shall expire, I shouldn't wonder.
It's a great cause, and I encourage you to get out and support it and the racers. I'll be the one hobbling along whining for someone to check the bus schedule.
