Esther's Closet is the result of a LOT of hard work on the part of many willing volunteers. An extension of Operation Hope, this venture has moved the work of clothing farm workers and "domestics" out of a tent and into a lovely little building in Sheryll Mairza's courtyard.
Operation Hope (OH) has been around for a long time. Utilizing volunteers and donations, this group clothes farm workers in the winter, repatriates ill or disabled expats, and advocates for those in Kuwait who are unable to speak up for themselves. Sheryll estimates that over the years, OH has given out over 25,000 "Warm Kits" to (mostly) men working in the fields around Kuwait. Conditions are difficult and wearing for these workers, and having shoes, a coat, and a blanket can mean the difference between being able to work and send money home to their families, and becoming too ill to work.
This latest venture means the opportunity to recycle gently used items, donate those unused bits & bobs, and to generate revenue for the work Operation Hope does in the community. Esther's Closet is open Saturdays 10 -1 pm for expats, and Tuesdays 1 - 4 for domestics. If you know some of the many women (or men) who work as domestic servants, take the time to get them over to Esther's Closet on a Tuesday afternoon. Tuesdays are special at Esther's Closet.
There's so much more that Operation Hope accomplishes in Kuwait, through passionate volunteers, generous donations, and community support. If you have time, money, or expertise you'd like to offer, knowing that this is the "frontline" of human need, contact the great people at Operation Hope and get involved.
From the OH website: If you are able to make a financial contribution, volunteer a few hours of your time, or donate gently used clothing or household items, please contact us at operationhopekuwait@yahoo.com or 9937-5613.
