Time Flies

Posted on August 4, 2010 at 7:06 AM

It's already been nearly a year since I joined the Soor Center as the Clinical Coordinator!

The time has flown by. We've gone from 3 therapists to 22, opened over a thousand files, and gotten involved in projects in the community which will have an impact on the future. It's incredibly exciting to be a part of advancing the understanding and acceptance of mental health issues in Kuwait.

We're now an approved practicum site by several universities in the States and have taken on five interns who provide mental health services in return for supervision. This allows the Soor Center to provide therapy regardless of ability to pay - and we're proud of this aspect of our practice. All of our therapists carry at least one pro bono client in their case load, and we regularly offer consulting services to the wider professional community.

For my part, I love the mix of what I'm doing - administration, therapy, supervision, and professional development. It keeps me engaged, busy, and anticipating what each day might bring.

It's a privilege to work with the stellar therapists who provide services here - they are broadly educated and deeply experienced. The collaborative atmosphere and the commitment to professional practice and ethics make it a joy to be here.

And of course, we're all proud to be associated with Dr. Naif Al-Mutawa - not only as the founder and Clinical Director of the Soor Center, but also as an amazing guy, dedicated to facilitating healthy dialogue and common understanding through his superheroes, The99. Check them out: www.the99.org - the whole concept is pretty amazing.

Bill and I are planning to revisit  the orphanage in India in November and we're looking for to reconnecting with the teachers and staff from last year's workshop. Dr. Singh was here in Kuwait in June and it was great to talk with her again and to hear that she is committed to further professional development for her staff. The kids are apparently happy we're coming because they get the week off. =)

Sending you sunshine from Kuwait,

Susannah-Joy
